MOUNT VERNON -- The Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group will offer the second networking event in its series of three Community Leaders Breakfasts this Thursday, Jan. 6, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the Harlan Dining Room located on the Cornell College campus.

Scheduled to appear with leaders from the Community Development Group will be representatives from the City of Lisbon, City of Mount Vernon, Lisbon Community Schools, Mount Vernon Community Schools, Cornell College, and local service groups and businesses.

“We are hoping to have high attendance this Thursday and everyone in attendance will have the opportunity to share information of interest to the communities of Mount Vernon and Lisbon,” says Joe Jennison, Director of the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group. “All community members are welcome to take part.”

A buffet-style breakfast will be available for $6. There is free parking located behind The Commons, on Commons Circle Drive and First Street. No RSVP is required to attend.

The next Community Leaders Breakfast will take place April 7.


The Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group today announced the winners of its month-long Hometown Holidays retail contests.

The winner of the Stocking Prize is Isabella Steele of Lisbon. Isabella will win a portable DVD player and school supplies supplied by Office Expressions.

The signups for the Super Saver giveaway yielded one winner every week throughout the month of December. These four winners will each receive a Super Saver coupon book. Winners included Marty Fall of Anamosa; Ann Gruber-Miller of Mount Vernon; Barbara Lau of Mount Vernon; and April Orris of Marion.

Mount Vernon was selected as a Main Street community in 2008, and practices economic development within the context of historic preservation.

About Main Street

The Main Street Approach is a copyrighted process of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  The Program has been used in Iowa since 1986 with a total of 56 communities having participated.  Mount Vernon was selected as a Main Street community on March 4, 2008 by the State of Iowa, after submitting a comprehensive application and presenting to a select board of reviewers.
