Living Roadways Visioning
MOUNT VERNON and LISBON, Iowa – Residents of both Mount Vernon and Lisbon have had the opportunity to tell their personal transportation stories over the past few weeks in Focus Group workshops offered locally through Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning Program.

The workshops are part of an input-gathering process facilitated by Trees Forever, Iowa State University Extension and the Iowa Department of Transportation. Coordinated locally by private citizens from both Mount Vernon and Lisbon, the goal of the project is to identify transportation needs and opportunities in the two communities, especially related to pedestrians, bicyclists and overall aesthetics.

“We have been thrilled with the feedback so far from both cities,” says Emily Swihart, Trees Forever Field Coordinator of the Project. “Our professional designers will use this data to develop concept designs for the area, and of course, the regular, ongoing, community input is an essential part of the process.”

The next step in the process will be a “Special Places Mapping” workshop where residents will be asked to identify important places in each community. Broken up into small groups, area participants will be asked to work together to identify important areas in Mount Vernon and Lisbon on several large aerial maps.

To participate in the upcoming Special Places Mapping project, residents are asked to RSVP for one of the events detailed below:

Residents without home Internet access can take the survey in person at either Lisbon City Hall, or at the Cole Library on the Cornell College campus.

At the conclusion of the Community Visioning Program, drawings and photographs describing the concept designs, along with an action plan, prepare the community to build on the visioning process, step by step, as resources become available.
