RAGBRAI will be passing through Mount Vernon-Lisbon July 25, 2008
An estimated 15,000 riders with support crews will be passing through on their way across Iowa...
The 36th Register Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) will be passing through Lisbon and Mount Vernon Friday, July 25, 2008. Riders will make their way from North Liberty to Solon, traveling north to Lisbon, then pausing in Mount Vernon where support crews will meet the riders. The route then continues to Martelle, Morely, and Mechanicsville, before riders spend the night in Tipton.
Both Mount Vernon and Lisbon City Councils have approved and endorsed the ride. The Community Development Board will be taking the reins to organize, advertise and coordinate local groups, businesses and churches to make this a fun, safe, entertaining event. The last time RAGBRAI passed through either city was in 2001, when an estimated 10,000 riders passed through the area.
Mount Vernon will be a Meeting Town, which means support vehicles can meet the riders, spend time in the area, and replenish whatever supplies are needed. Riders are expected to be on their way to Martelle by 2:30 p.m. in order to arrive at their future destinations on time.
This could have a significant economic impact on the area, and volunteers will be needed to help with preparations. Local civic organizations, businesses, and church groups are expected to provide riders with a variety of home-cooked goodies, baked goods and specialty products. Local entertainment will also be asked to participate.
According to RAGBRAI officials, two thirds of the riders in 2007 were male, with an average age of 43. This is a seven day bicycle ride across Iowa and is the longest, largest, oldest bicycle touring ride in the world. Daily mileages average 68 miles a day, and range from 49 to 95 miles per day. Iowa terrain can vary from flat to very steep hills, and as we know, there are a few hills in this area! If you're planning on participating this year, please take the time to train so you can really enjoy this special event.
