Farmer's Market Brings Diversity to the Area
Looking for hand-made soaps, kolaches, jams, baked goods, fresh produce, vegetables, flowers or tender pork? The Farmer's Market in Mount Vernon has all that and more.
Thursday's from 4 - 6pm through October, local producers and citizens bring a rich variety of products to Mount Vernon for your enjoyment. Located adjacent to Mount Vernon's Visitor's Center on Main Street, the market is a relaxing, friendly, interesting place to explore diverse, fresh goods. An unassuming environment of tables, displays and small-town charm adds to the joy of shopping for local products.
Note to local restaurants: Come here for fresh produce - your customers will love you for it! Who wouldn't be happy with mixed greens, spinach and tomatoes on a dinner salad?
The selection of products is growing thanks to David Miller, the Market Master, who manages a loose coalition of producers that continues to evolve. David also grows fruits and vegetables for his business Pure Prairie Gardens, in addition to authoring an entertaining weekly email.
Jean Smith and Ray Bures from Ely bring their baked goods and hand-made (from scratch) kolaches fresh from the oven. Sue's Kitchen in Mount Vernon provides breads, cakes and pies that can be custom ordered from an extensive menu.
The list of quality producers goes on: Kroul Farm Garden & Greenhouse, Evelyn Walshire from Mechanicsville, Lois Pavelka, Ann Booth and many others. But to truly take advantage of this open market, take the time to talk to the vendors who love what they do, and ask about their products. That's all part of the fun. You'll be sure to learn about the many wonderful things grown or made locally.
The Farmer's Market is open early May through October, depending on product availability and weather. During the winter, there are monthly sales indoors. Stop by and sign-up for the weekly email newsletter so you don't miss this fantastic marketplace.
