Lisbon Heritage Hall, located just above the Lisbon Public Library, is a rare gem in the world of performance concert halls. It was renovated in 1997 for use as a cultural center for programs offered through the library and by community groups. Concerts by professional musicians, student piano and string recitals, community theatre productions, puppet shows for children and programs by visiting writers and artists have all been enjoyed free of charge since then.
Amy White, Director of the library, and event coordinator for the hall, calls it "a hidden treasure as you're stepping into another century." Indeed, the hall dates back to the late 1880's, a time when traveling musicians and theatre groups performed regularly. Even the signatures of past performers adorn the walls preserved in frames around the hall.
With comfortable seating for 50, Amy usually books 10-12 performances a year, and partners with Cole Library to bring educational and cultural programs to the hall. A foot-high stage spanning the width of the floor can easily accommodate several musicians with instruments, or a whole troupe of performers. Another "treasure" in the hall is a baby grand piano just waiting for a musician to bring its notes to life. Adding to the ambience of this unique space are seasonal historical displays courtesy of the Lisbon History Center.
